CRB CHECK

IThe Criminal Records Bureau or CRB is a Home Office Agency of in place to assist companies in making informed and safer recruitment decisions by performing CRB Checks

The service provided by the CRB enables companies in the private, public and voluntary sector to undertake knowledgeable recruitment decisions by identifying potential employees who may be unsuitable for particular line of employment, especially work that involves children or at risk adults.

Companies wanting to use the service can request that successful job applicants submit an application for one of two types of check.  The nature of the position will determine which type of check is required.  The two checks are called Enhanced and Standard Disclosures; both require a fee but are free of charge to volunteers.

The Standard Disclosure CRB Check

This is first and foremost available to anyone involved in working with children or at risk adults, as well as a number other occupations and entry into professions as mentioned in the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act of 1974.  The Standard Disclosure shows existing and previous convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are currently held on the National Police Computer.  If the position involves working with children or at risk adults, the subsequent list may be searched also:

  • Protection of Children Act List
  • Protection of Vulnerable Adults  List
  • Information that is held under Section 142 of the Education Act 2002 

The Enhanced Disclosure CRB Check

This is the highest level of check available to anyone involved in regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults.  It is also available in certain licensing purposes and judicial appointments.  Enhanced Disclosures contain the same information as the Standard Disclosure but with the addition of any relevant and proportionate information held by the local police forces.
